Microsoft Windows 7 … What’s it all about?

Hot New Tech Products, Trends and Tools No comments

Windows 7 has recently been released by Microsoft and it is creating a lot of buzz, and rightfully so. Windows 7 is by far their most stable OS release in as many years as I can remember from Microsoft, and it does wonders for making windows easy to use and graphically appealing.

I have heard a lot of people say “it is much more Mac like”. Given the legions of Mac devotees and the migration of many long time windows users to the Mac platform over the past handful of years I would consider this a compliment if I were Microsoft.

Besides the stability and the easy to use good looking graphical interface, Windows 7 starts to bring a new error of simplified computing to the world. The user interface is slick looking abut also includes a new task bar with big easy to see icons that allow you to jump between application that are open , access recently opened applications, and chose to doc or un-doc specific applications from your task bar.

There are also built in migration tools to move you from your old computer into your new windows 7 computer and even more impressive is the fact that the migration tools work pretty well. My mom was able to setup her windows 7 computer at home and hit the right buttons for the new PC to move her old files and folder over from her old PC.

This may not sound like much of a triumph, sorry if you are out there reading this mom, but my mom is a user that had some figuring out to do when she first starting using a mouse to give you an indication of the simplicity.

The list of improvement in this operation system goes on and on, including:

Gadgets

Themes

Shortcuts

Advancements in minimizing and maximizing windows

New preview options

Advanced media (audio and video) capabilities

Virtual XP mode for legacy applications

Technical advances including advanced driver support and an OS that does not bog down your computer

And the list continues on..

The next obvious question is:  Should I move to windows 7?

My answer to this depends. I know the OS is stable because I have been testing it for the last month with very few problems. But like any new technology product there are small problems and annoyances that will be fixed in the coming months with service packs and greater third party support for the OS.

For me I cannot use my phone dialer software outside of the XP virtual mode which crashes frequently. Not the end of the world but a pain in the neck at times.

I maintain that for home use I would encourage anyone getting a new PC to move right into windows 7 but for office use I suggest you wait a few months. It is always best to be right behind the cutting edge of technology and new releases because those that are right at the edge often get to work out all the little bugs and problems and they enjoy doing it.

If you give this OS six months you will hear me say that you should be creating your organizations migration path.

Until that time let someone else deal with the nasty nicks and bruises that are associated with the cutting edge.

Affordable holiday gadgets for the “Geek-at-heart”

Hot New Tech Products, Trends and Tools No comments

You guessed it — the Holiday season is right around the corner yet again! Unfortunately for most of us, our wallets are are little thinner than usual this year. Don’t fret! Although hi-tech gifts tend to typically cost you a pretty penny to buy, there are plenty of options out there that won’t break the bank. In this post I’ll share a handful of my affordable favorites.

Lexmark X4650 wireless all-in-one printer – This bad boy costs a measly $59 at your local Walmart Store. Need to ship it instead? It ships to most places for under $1.

The Beatles: Rock Band Value Edition – This system goes for $159.99 most places, but Amazon is offering it for $99, including shipping! It’s available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. This value edition included the game itself, natch, along with the guitar, drum set, and microphone. $99 is a steal for this package, especially around the holidays.

Top notch GPS for a little over $100 – It’s difficult to find a decent GPS without shelling out at least $300 or so. But right now, TigerDirect is offering the Magellan 5310 GPS for $129.99.  If you’ve been waiting to strike a bargain on one of these for yourself (or maybe for your kids) this will most likely be the deal of the season.

Netbook - PCUSA is offering a blue, Samsung NC 10-13GB Netbook for $299. With a 2.8 pound laptop and 6 Cell Lithium battery, this little guy will offer you the perfect personal escape if you’ve had all you can take of Aunt Ida’s crazy stories over Holiday break.

External hard drivesComputerGeeks.com always offers deep discounts on computers, cameras, and more. They’re now offering great deals on many external hard drives – great for backing up your personal computer at home, and storing your music and video files on. They also run a Daily Deal at the top of their homepage. Today it’s a wireless Dell mouse for $7.99.

Happy Holiday Season! Now, get shopping!

Apple as your TV?

Hot New Tech Products, Trends and Tools No comments

Cable networks have got us in a compromising state — their prices are pretty high (especially considering how much TV an average working adult actually watches,) and there are very few options out there to choose from. Many of us are paying well over 100 bucks a month for cable and Internet. That said, would you be willing to pay 30 dollars a month to trade in your cable box and watch TV via iTunes instead?

Apple is trying to rally up support from various TV networks; they hope to round up enough networks to allow themselves to introduce a monthly subscription service that would deliver TV programs via iTunes multimedia software. Apple’s new TV pitch will allow its users to have cable access without any hardware or boxes, it simply will be an extension of its already popular iTunes software, which last year had a reported 65+ million user accounts.

Nothing has been finalized yet, but there have been rumblings that Disney will be the first big network to jump on board with Apple on this idea. Apple has not commented on this suspicion, but the past has proved that Disney is usually willing to experiment with Apple. Also, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is Disney’s largest single shareholder to date.

Apple’s latest idea has both intrigued networks and posed some serious concerns. Of course it would be great to have additional revenue, but networks would also chance sabotaging existing relationships with their current cable networks, like Comcast. Losing advertising dollars and the potential for show ratings to become skewed are two more concerns that are floating around networks.

Apple will not reveal a release date for this service yet, and they know that there are still some things to workout internally. Stay tuned because their TV subscription service may not be far from its release. Maybe you will be able to chop down your cable in 2010.
